Mission
The
mission of the paper is to inform, educate and inspire. As
a Catholic newspaper publisher, The Catholic Transcript Inc. is
part of the overall mission of the Church in the Archdiocese.
It is an official tool of evangelization as it seeks to form and
inform the Catholic faith community of Connecticut. The Catholic
Transcript positions itself as a unique publication that brings
news and information with a distinctly Catholic perspective. It
operates according to the highest standards of professional journalism,
seeking to serve the Church in truth, as it informs, educates,
inspires and supports the faith journey of the contemporary Catholic.
Our
Own Story
The Catholic
Transcript Inc., which publishes The Transcript, was incorporated
as a not-for-profit corporation in June 1959. Until October 1996
it was Connecticut's only weekly Catholic newspaper and the official
weekly newspaper of the Catholic Church in Connecticut. It became
a monthly publication in December 1996.
The
Catholic Transcript traces its roots back to 1829 when the
first weekly Catholic newspaper appeared in Connecticut, The
Catholic Press. In 1896, Bishop Michael Tierney recognized
the need for the Diocese of Hartford to have an official channel
of communications with Connecticut's growing Catholic population.
In April 1896, the Diocese of Hartford purchased The Connecticut
Catholic Publishing Co. The Connecticut Catholic became
the official weekly newspaper of the Diocese of Hartford. In April
of 1898, the name of the newspaper was changed from The Connecticut
Catholic to The Catholic Transcript.
The
Catholic Transcript also publishes The Connecticut Catholic
Directory, a directory of the Archdiocese of Hartford and
Dioceses of Bridgeport, Norwich and Stamford (Byzantine Rite),
as well as providing graphic services to other archdiocesan agencies.
The
Catholic Transcript accepts freelance material for consideration.
It offers syndicated columns and features.
