Saint Mary’s Hospital Honors Archbishop Henry J. Mansell at Champion Dinner

HARTFORD, Conn. – (September 13, 2011) Archbishop Henry J. Mansell was recognized as the 2011 Saint Mary’s Hospital Champion on Monday, September 12 at a dinner held at the Villa Rosa in Waterbury.

Saint Mary’s Hospital Foundation honored the Archbishop for his deep understanding, leadership and commitment to healthcare. Since being installed as Archbishop of Hartford in 2003, Archbishop Mansell has served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of St. Mary’s Health System. His guidance and leadership have enabled the hospital to expand its services, increase admissions, invest in new technologies, enhance patient service, and attain financial stability. In the past four years, Saint Mary’s has posted positive financial performance.

According to Eric Albert, Chairman of Saint Mary’s Hospital’s Foundation, the Champion Award is given annually to someone who has provided extraordinary leadership and commitment to Saint Mary’s Health System and to the community.

“Archbishop Henry J. Mansell has demonstrated his commitment to Saint Mary’s for the past eight years through his thoughtful guidance and presence at board meetings, his attendance at our special events, his participation in numerous other hospital activities, and his financial support of the hospital. Most of all, his support enables our physicians, volunteers and staff to live our Mission of providing ‘exceptional care, every patient, every day,’” said Albert.

Archbishop Mansell’s accomplishments in healthcare are not limited to Saint Mary’s Hospital. Through the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, he has been able to support the Malta House of Care (MHC) mobile clinic, a hospital on wheels which helps people who do not have health insurance. Staffed by volunteer physicians and nurses, the MHC medical van rolls into both Waterbury’s and Hartford’s most challenged neighborhoods offering free physical examinations, free diagnostic tests, free prescriptions and referrals.

Through the Archbishop’s Appeal and the Emergency Assistance Fund, the Archbishop has also been able to provide additional medical and dental care, shelter and economic assistance to people who need it.

Archbishop Mansell also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford where he initiated the Priest Wellness Program in 2006, now provided as well at St. Mary’s Hospital, and Saint Raphael’s Hospital in New Haven.

Dinner sponsors for the Champion Dinner include LHP Hospital Group, Inc., O & G and Loehmann Blasius Chevrolet and Cadillac.
